Ghana deserves a landmark.

Ghana has stadiums, but no international standard flagship. This proposal shows one that could draw the world to the country and investment to our game, and it can start now.

We have stadiums. We do not have a flagship.#

Ghana's city stadiums hold decades of national memory. Many have also aged, and patch repairs have not brought them to international standard.

In September 2024 CAF withdrew its approval of Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, and the Black Stars had to play home qualifiers outside Ghana. In September 2026 the Ghana Football Association said the Accra Sports Stadium, then under rehabilitation, was the only approved venue in the country.

Those venues should be renewed, and NEXKOOMSON is conceptualising that work as separate projects. But renewal alone will not give Ghana what other football nations have: one landmark stadium that attracts world events, visitors and investment to the country and to our game.

The challenge, and one possible answer.#

The national infrastructure challenge

  • No international standard flagship stadium, and city venues that have aged despite repeated repairs.
  • Black Stars home matches moved abroad when approval was withdrawn.
  • Talent development, medical care and heritage spread across separate sites, or missing.
  • Stadiums that are quiet on the days without a match.
  • No landmark that attracts world events and investors.

This independent concept proposal

  • One national stadium of about 80,000 seats at the centre of a planned Sports City.
  • An academy, training pitches, sports science and a museum on the same ground.
  • A hotel, conference hall, retail, plaza and transit designed for year round use.
  • A complete vision, ready for a government and investors to take forward now.

The left column is project rationale, not a formal audit of national facilities. A feasibility study would need to test each point with data from the relevant authorities and federations.

A national scale, still to be tested.#

About 80,000 seats would roughly double the capacity of today's largest venue and place the stadium among the larger football grounds on the continent. That scale was chosen to support a national flagship that can host finals, ceremonies and major concerts.

It is a design hypothesis, not a finding. Demand studies may show that a smaller bowl, or one that can grow in phases, serves Ghana better. The concept should change if the evidence says so.

Talent needs a pathway, not only a pitch.#

The National Football Academy, five training pitches and the sports science centre are planned as the working core of the campus. Young players would train, study, recover and be assessed on one site, a short walk from the stadium they hope to play in.

Equal access, written in from the start.#

The proposal asks that women's football, para sport and community programmes have guaranteed access to pitches, coaching, medical care and match dates. The bowl includes 144 wheelchair positions in the P01 schedule, and the indoor arena is intended for sports beyond football.

These are principles for the brief. The federations, athletes and disability organisations concerned should shape how they work.

A home for the story of Ghanaian sport.#

A national sports museum would collect and present the history of Ghanaian athletes across every discipline, open daily and free of matchday pressure. The Black Star Plaza gives the public a civic space for celebration, memory and gathering.

Useful on the other 340 days.#

Most stadiums host a few dozen events a year. The hotel, conference hall, retail promenade, museum and academy are planned so the campus has daily activity and income streams beyond football. Whether those streams can sustain the campus is a question for a business case.
