Ghana National Stadium

Stadiums in Ghana.

Ghana’s largest stadiums seat about 40,000 people, and for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers only one, Accra Sports Stadium, was approved for international football. Here are the country’s main grounds, the new regional stadium programme, and the proposed 80,000 seat Ghana National Stadium.

Where the Black Stars can play.#

In September 2024 CAF banned Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi from hosting international matches, and the Black Stars had to play home games on neutral ground (Ghana News Agency, 11 September 2024).

For the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, the Ghana Football Association named Accra Sports Stadium as the only approved venue in the country (MyJoyOnline, 9 September 2026). For domestic football, the GFA cleared a list of venues for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League, including Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Stadium, Len Clay Stadium and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium (Ghana Football Association, 17 August 2026).

A country of more than 30 million people, five times at the World Cup and four times African champions, has one stadium cleared for the continent’s qualifiers.

New regional stadiums.#

The government has announced 10 new smaller stadiums, expanded from an earlier plan of six for the newer regions: Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah and Ahafo. The TnA Stadium in Tarkwa was cited as a cost effective model (3News, on the GFA Congress of 20 August 2026).

Regional stadiums bring football closer to communities. They are a different job from a national stadium: the large venue for international tournaments, finals, state occasions and concerts that the country can rally around.

A flagship stadium for Ghana.#

The Ghana National Stadium, The Star at the Heart, is an independent concept by NEXKOOMSON for an 80,000 seat national stadium, about twice the size of any stadium in Ghana today, at the centre of a connected Ghana National Sports City with an academy, museum, hotel and training pitches.

Beyond the Game. Built for Generations. It is a proposal only: not commissioned, approved or funded by any public body, with no site or budget confirmed.

Questions people ask.#

What is the largest stadium in Ghana?

Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Accra Sports Stadium are the largest, each listed at about 40,000 seats. The proposed Ghana National Stadium concept would seat about 80,000, roughly twice as many.

Where do the Black Stars play their home matches?

Mainly at Accra Sports Stadium. For the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, the Ghana Football Association named it the only approved venue in the country. Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Cape Coast Sports Stadium have also hosted the national team.

Is Ghana building new stadiums?

Yes. The government has announced a programme of 10 new smaller regional stadiums, starting with the newer regions. None of them is a national stadium of 80,000 seats.

What is the Ghana National Stadium?

An independent concept proposal by NEXKOOMSON for an 80,000 seat national stadium at the heart of a connected Ghana National Sports City. It is called The Star at the Heart.

Is the Ghana National Stadium a government project?

No. It is not commissioned, approved, endorsed or funded by the Government of Ghana or any public body. No site, budget or construction has been confirmed. It is offered so a government and investors can take it up.

Who designed the Ghana National Stadium concept?

NEXKOOMSON ideated, conceptualised and visualised it. NEXKOOMSON is a creative studio, not a construction company; any delivery would be led by public bodies with licensed architects, engineers and contractors.

Where would the stadium be built?

No site has been chosen. The masterplan is illustrative, and choosing a site would be part of an independent feasibility study.

Can I see inside the proposed stadium?

Yes. The concept film, renders, drawings and an explorable virtual world are all free to view on this site.
